Included amongst those new concepts were the members of the Black Order, Thanos’s generals from the Infinity event. Though in many ways calling back to the classic Infinity Gauntlet, Avengers: Infinity War did offer a few newer concepts as well. It’s nice to finally get a new War Machine after all this time, and a more accurate Cull Obsidian is pretty cool too. And then they sat and waited for me to open them for a good four months, because I got distracted and kind of forgot I had them…whoops. The second set took forever to hit Walgreens, but I managed to find this particular pair without too much trouble once they actually started showing up. I picked these up…gosh…back in September, if you can believe it. The Pop! and one of the statues also had these, indicating the weapon he had in the final movie was a very late game adjustment. Here? He’s essentially got some space-brass-knuckles. In the movie, Cull has a sort of hammer/axe/chain sort of thing. The biggest change from this figure to the screen comes in the form of accessories. The colors on the costume were ever so slightly tweaked by the time the movie came out as well, but they aren’t terribly far off. I think it’s the skin that bugs me the most, especially after the Legends figure. The paint is is decent, though he’s again a little light on the detailing. The design, at least from a sculpting standpoint, isn’t that noticeably different from his final look in the movie. The detail work on some of the character-specific parts, the head in particular, is a little soft, but the important details are all there, and he’s got more sculpted elements than not. He gets a unique head, torso cap, upper left arm, and skirt piece, as well as re-using the standard “big guy” parts for his right arm, left hand, legs, and feet. The ‘mate clearly was put into production later in the process, as he ends up a lot closer, but there are still some slight inaccuracies. His Legends release, though an awesomely fun figure, was based on an early design that wasn’t all that close to the final. He just can’t catch a break for accuracy. War Machine is packed with a flight stand and a standard clear display stand. I think this one’s not as good as the IM2 version, but at least it doesn’t look as goofy as the AoU variant. Under the helmet is another stab at a Don Cheadle likeness. It helps to make this armor seem a bit more unique compared to the others. The paint work on this figure is better than the last few War Machine’s the mix of gunmetal grey and silver looks nice, and I’m happy that they kept the camo patterning the armor had in the movie. The more specific parts are as well-sculpted as ever, matching up with the re-used gauntlets in terms of design aesthetic and level of detailing. I don’t mind the move back to printed faces for the helmets, and it’s at the very least consistent with how they handled Tony’s Mark 50 armor. It does a respectable job of estimating Rhodey’s appearance from the movie. The figure is based on the standard ‘mate body, with a generic slip-on mask piece, a new torso cap, upper arms, and belt, and the gauntlets from the last five versions of the character. Though not amazingly different from his armor in Civil War, Rhodey’s suit had still been slightly tinkered with for its somewhat brief appearance in IW, so that’s what we’re seeing here. Compared to the more retread-heavy Drax and Gamora, they had a tendency of being the first set to vanish a lot of the time.Īfter peddling the same War Machine ‘mate three times, DST finally gave us an honest to god update for his Infinity War appearance. War Machine and Cull Obsidian were one of the two Walgreens-exclusives pairings in the second Infinity War-based assortment of Marvel Minimates. Good thing I made it through last year unscathed and I don’t have to do it again…crap, I have to do it again, don’t I? Well, I’d best get through the last of *last* year’s stuff, then, shouldn’t I? So, without further ado, War Machine & Cull Obsidian! Man, three Marvel movies in one year sure does have a way of burning out and making it easy for some of the merch to slip through the cracks for way longer than you’d expect. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.” A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. “As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. By 1921, the fraternity had grown to 17 active chapters. The first chapter in the South came in 1919, at Meharry Medical College - Kappa chapter. The fraternity has over 150,000 members and is divided into twelve provinces (districts/regions), with each chapter under the aegis of a province.įollowing its inception at Indiana University in 1911, the fraternity expanded to charter at the University of Illinois (now, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) (1913), University of Iowa (1914), and Wilberforce University, Lincoln University (Pennsylvania) (the second oldest historically black university), Ohio State University (1915). Kappa Alpha Psi ( ΚΑΨ), an international historically Black fraternity, has chartered over 400 undergraduate chapters in the continental United States, plus alumni and international chapters. 20% engagement in anything is unacceptable and that every demographic (20,30,40,50,60,70 etc) must do their part to strengthen each other and strengthen the fraternity and support what Our Founders intended for the Fraternity to be.ġ7 Iron sharpeneth iron so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.īrother Kyle C.Delta chapter at Wilberforce University, 1922 In summary, we must close the gap in engaging those brothers under 40 and at the same time, the under 40 must also be open and engage the brotherhood. The positive and/or negative foundation of who we become is laid in our lives generally speaking when we are young and oftentimes it becomes to late once we become older and set in our ways. I am not naïve to believe that under/over age of 40 party or like events the same way but there must be some events that can cross all age demographics as the under 40 is our future leaders and if we can’t get them engaged early then they likely won’t be engaged when they become over 40. I respect everyone's opinions in that they can't be discounted but believe that through this forum that we value the differences of thought but also determine how to incorporate how we become more inclusive in that all Brothers whether over or under 40 can be on one accord as were our Founders!Īs it relates to promotional or Founders Day events, we should and must determine ways that when events are planned that we cater to ALL Brothers regardless of age are welcomed to participate in events that caters to all demographic as we are all Brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi. Only in America are we free to have open and honest discussions and I love that all of the missives of each and every brother thus far has been thoughtful, respectful and promote vast viewpoints. We should instead affirm good spirit and brotherhood through inclusion. Creating a rule, banning or discouraging the use of J5 seems punitive. Additionally, we should, as a fraternity, encourage the affirmative. With that said, I think all formal communication from chapters, provinces and our national governance structure should use FOUNDER'S DAY not J5. We need to reconnect the 80% of our membership who decided (both undergraduate and alumni) to remain inactive (not financial, sustaining or affiliated with a chapter) after only 2-3 years in the bond. Let's focus Founder's Day on our foundation of brotherhood and continue to try to bring our fraternity together nationally. Remember, our fraternity was foundered on the basis of brotherhood - not community service, not joint organizations and not politics but BROTHERHOOD. To ban a phrase is petty! Let's focus on the big picture: getting brothers to attend the national Founder's Day not having chapters host conflicting events during this time and having the events focus on brotherhood. Founder's Day should be a time of reclamation, rededication and fraternal rejuvenation. I think the protocol around Founder's Day being for Brothers to recommit to the founding of the fraternity and to focus on our revered founders is much more important than the "J5" tag line. Let us not forget the hard work and sacrifice by them to create what we have today. The Founders have at the very least earned the respect from us that we will do right by them at every turn. There should be some pride and respect in honoring this century-old organization. Whether typing a Founders Day salutation or speaking it being lazy obviously is not the way to go. If it is something that has to be explained, then we are already missing the mark. Simply put if we are going to use something as a marketing tool, we need to make it relative to the audience for which we are trying to attract. What put it into perspective for me was as I observed someone pick up a flyer not too long ago, they commented by asking, what's J5? Followed by the other asking what does Kappa Alpha Psi has to do with the Jackson Five? I did not like the use of it six years ago and am not a fan of it today. Personally, I hate the use of the moniker and would prefer that it be banned altogether. Johnny meets Kathy, a straight-laced Honor student, and strikes up a romance with her against the wishes of her father (Gross) and her boyfriend (some choad). They get trapped in some crummy small town and just…hang out…until the cycle is repaired. Īnyway, Cool as Ice follows the adventures of Johnny Van Owen, a rapper and motorcyclist, as he and his backup band ride through the Midwest between gigs until one of their stupid motorcycles break down. Maybe he was suffering from a congenital eye disease when working on Cool as Ice. Speaking of gross, Michael “ Family Ties ” Gross is in this film, which would be surprising if it it weren’t superseded by the fact the director of photography eventually went on to be the cinematographer for Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, and Minority Report, which is downright mind-blowing. How to quantify a movie that has no other raison d’être than to promote the person starring in it? The plot is paper-thin and hacky, the direction is frankly bizarre at times, and whoever thought an audience would willingly pay money to watch this movie grossly overestimated the appeal of Vanilla Van Winkle. Of course, it also doesn’t help that Cool as Ice is a terrible movie. Released October 18, 1991, Cool as Ice found itself in a radically different culture than the one Vanilla Ice had reigned supreme just a year earlier, with the Seattle Sound quickly ascending to the spot it would largely hold until the end of the decade and the youth of America realizing that 8-ball jackets, motorcycles, and cheesy white boy hip-hop was decidedly embarrassing for everyone involved. The problem was, by the time the movie came out, the cultural moment had passed for Vanilla Ice to be considered “cool.” He already showed up at the end of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, for cripes sake, what did he want, the moon ? Some distinguished capitalists got together and, combined with Universal Studios, decided that what this young rapping fellow needed was to star in a feature film. It was literally Vanilla Ice being considered cool before Nirvana stepped in and reminded everybody what good music was supposed to sound like and what being cool looked like.Īnd it being the 1990s (and the late 20th century in America in general) we were a country with almost too much money on its hands and limited media outlets to which we could turn. The culture flailed away like a kid going through puberty, trying to figure out what the hell’s going on, taking a tacky misstep to distinguish itself from the previous decade with ill-advised musical, aesthetic, and sartorial choices in the process. It’s staggering to imagine a time in history where this was considered 1) good music, 2) worthy of gigantic success, and 3) something people would listen to unironically.īut such was life in 1990: the 1980s had just barely ended and America was still a year away from grunge music and two years away from Bill Clinton in the White House. With the privilege of hindsight, think about this: that song was the first hip hop single to top the Billboard charts in history and its album spent sixteen weeks at #1 on the charts. To modern ears it sounds like hip-hop for babies. You may already be familiar with what Vanilla Ice was in pop culture history, but just to let it sink in before this article/recap goes any further, click here and watch as long as you can stand it. If someone tried to pull his lame act in modern times, he would most likely be soundly mocked in his first YouTube video and then quit his aspirations long before it got as far as it did with his limited appeal. Looking back, it’s almost unbelievable that Ice (real name Matthew Van Winkle, which is much better than his silly stage name) got as far as he did in his career. The trend in rap and hip-hop circa 1990 was to ease the country at large into this genre by introducing it through clean, inoffensive, easy-to-follow rhyming couplets and upbeat drum loops before dropping the seismic hammer that was Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, and Biggy Smalls.īut first pop culture had to endure the shameful rapping stylistics of Vanilla Ice. MC Hammer had the skills to pay the bills (well, at least for a little while), but he’s not known for his rap career in the 21st century. While Will Smith was a likable personality, his rap “career” was really a stepping stone to a far more successful acting career. At one point in the history of America -specifically the beautiful, stupid early 1990s – there was an awkward transition in pop culture when rap music was on the verge of being a mainstream genre and something entertainers aped to seem hip without actually working too hard at making their rap good or authentic. The second way to do this is to specify a certain number of frogs you want to instantiate in the current scene. And in our code above, we generate a frog every frame. See what happened here? The reason for this is the default rate for a Unity game is 60 frames per second. Now cut the code you wrote in the start function and paste it in the update function. That will probably be too much – but let’s check it out. In this case we will get a frog in every game frame. First, we can write the code in the update function. Let’s run the game and check where the frog will appear: We can attach it to the main camera and drag and drop the frog prefab into the empty field. To do this, write the following code in a new script file called “Spawn”.įor this script to work it has to be attached to a game object. We will generate a random number between 0 and the width of the screen for the X position and random number between 0 and the height of the screen for the Y position. To do so, we need to determine the width and height of the screen. We want to instantiate the frog within the bounds of the screen right. We don’t need it anymore as we will instantiate several frogs from the prefab we just created. To do so, just right click on the frog and then delete. C# script: Instantiate a prefab in a random placeīefore instantiating several frogs into the scene, delete the frog currently in the scene. To create a prefab, simply drag the game object (in this case, the frog) from the hierarchy into the prefabs folder. How to create a prefabīefore creating a prefab, create a new folder inside the assets folder and name it “Prefabs”. Let’s write the following code in the “KillFrog” script to make sure the frog collides only with the game object with the “lake” tag. We’ll add a tag and name it “lake” in the inspector as shown in the image below. To fix this problem, simply add a tag to the lake in the inspector and in the script check if the frog collided with the game object with the tag “lake”. So, when we add more frogs later, and when they collide with each other, the frogs will get destroyed. The above code we added will be problematic in the future it will destroy the frog if it collides with any game object with a collider component attached to it. As you can see, the frog is destroyed and there is a water splash effect when it nears the bottom. Let’s drag and drop the water effect in the empty field in the inspector: Write the following code in the “KillFrog” script: We will do exactly as we did in my last article with the smoke effect, but we will write the code inside the OnCollisionEnter2D() function. Open JMO Assets folder > CFX2 Prefabs folder > Water. As I introduced previously, we can visit the Unity Assets store and import the “Cartoon FX free” asset. Now let’s instantiate the water effect for when the frog falls into the lake. Let’s save the code and run the game to check if the frog will get destroyed. Private void OnCollisionEnter2D ( Collision2D collision ) Open the “KillFrog” script and write the following code. Now let’s add a script so that when the frog collides with the lake game object it gets destroyed. We need to edit the collider to be located at the bottom of the scene and make it as wide as the scene (as shown in the image below): For a game object to collide with another, we need to add the “Box Collider 2D” component as I explained in my previous article ( deep link for your convenience). To do so, we will simply create an empty object by right clicking in the hierarchy, and give it the name: “lake”. But the lake is a background image and we want the frog to be able to collide with the lake. Let’s say we want to add a water effect for when the frog falls into the lake. How to add the falling effect to your Unity game In this tutorial, Unity Version “2020.3.23f1” is used. The following should be installed on your computer to follow along this tutorial: In this article, we are going to walk-through how to add the falling effect, how to instantiate several prefabs in random places, & how to make a score counter (and display it) for our Frog game. You can check out my intro article, where I dive into Unity editor basics, and then part 1 of our “Developing your first Unity game”, where we begin developing our Frog Unity game and I dig a bit deeper into a couple important game object components. Welcome to the third article in my Unity series where we are developing a Unity game. The single, which had Lebra spitting bars over a marching band soundtrack was accompanied by a video shot at her old high school. Instagram: Jolie’s only problem is that people want to see more of her. It remains to be seen if the music will keep pace with his image but fans should e excited watching it all unfold. His tracks have garnered attention from other MC’s like Chance the Rapper, Trippie Redd, and Lil Yachty. At this point he’s probably more well known for his look than his music but that hasn’t stopped him from gaining a guest spot on Tyler the Creator’s Call Me If You Get Lost as well as an opening spot on the west coast rapper’s tour. He has been embraced somewhat by the fashion world for his overall aesthetic. Instagram: is the elusive rock/rap artist coming from Beaumont. Dende is versatile so there’s no telling what he’ll do next but it is definitely worth keeping an eye on him. He’s also starting to get noticed for his skills on the mike getting nods from Pharrell and The Roots. He’s got a charming (or dark depending on the day) sense of humor based on his twitter feed and podcast, Dende Hour. Since then he has released Me?, the pandemic inspired Socially Distant, the George Floyd inspired film In Case You Forgot I’m Black, and most recently, the R&B EP Pregnancy Pack. The album was a hodgepodge of the Dende’s musical taste and foreshadowed what was to come. Instagram: 2019 Katy MC Dende released DrkMttr, an eclectic mix of music which had him rapping and singing over soulful jazz, R&B, trip hop, electronic music and more. Ken is only a few mixtapes and a couple of albums deep in her career but she is quickly proving that her name is accurate. The project, released through a partnership between Ken and Asylum Records, expands Ken’s reach in the industry with tracks like "Rose Gold Stripper Pole", which she recently remixed with 2 Chainz. She was a big draw at this year’s Rolling Loud Festival in NYC, performing songs off her latest release, What’s My Name. Ken the Man, whose rap name began because she needed to distinguish herself from other Kens on SoundCloud, but quickly stuck because of her skill and ability to out rap anyone, including the dudes, continues to increase her fanbase with each release. The album’s commercial success showed the world that Ken was more than ready for a bigger stage. Instagram: 2020 Kentavia Miller released 4 da 304’s, an independently released album produced by Houston’s own Bigg Cuz Beats. He continues to sign acts like Peso Peso and Rizzoo Rizzoo, continues to drop new music, continues to be controversial (right now TSF members are campaigning to get Sauce’s Instagram back), and continues to solidify his legacy. While some might say he’s reached his ceiling it’s our belief that he’s just getting started. He’s been praised by Jay-Z, beefed with several rappers, signed a string of talent to his label, and doesn’t appear to be showing any signs of stopping. He’s well known by his peers in the industry and his polarizing personality garners attention while helping fuel his independent label, TSF. He has quickly risen to as one of the more influential rappers out of Houston. Actually, Sauce Walka could have been on anyone’s who-to-watch-in Texas list for the last five years. I was only going to name ten artists, but the truth is Sauce Walka should have been on the list two years ago. This list is in no particular order but everyone on it is someone that you should keep an eye on. Overall, the artists on that list continue to grow and help sustain the increasing hold that Houston has on the music industry and pop culture. Le$ dropped an album with Houston legend Bun B and then returned with a solo album for the end of the year. Tobe Nwigwe just ended a sold-out tour here in Houston with a cast of Hip-Hop all-stars. Maxo Kream released the introspective Weight of the World to critical acclaim. A lot of the artists like Megan Thee Stallion had already built-up steam so it was a little easier to weather the storm but everyone on the list continued to grow over the last two years. Of course, this was pre-pandemic and adjusting to the new music climate proved to be a big obstacle for those in the entertainment industry. Back in 2019 we published a list of Houston artists to keep an eye on. If there's something I need to deal with, I can usually find a solution on my run, and by the time I get home I'm relaxed. I'm training for the London Marathon at the moment, so I run eight miles, three nights a week. I try to make sure I have at least five minutes a day to pause for reflection. I also arrive early for work to make sure I'm prepared. One rule I try to stick to is that I do my work at work I'll stay late to get it finished but I won't take it home. I'm an organised person I won't leave my office without getting everything ready for the next morning. So I'm at the school gate at the start and end of every day. It's when things fester that they create most stress. The other thing that helps me remain calm is being highly visible, so that everyone – parents and those in school – can talk to me as soon as something is niggling them. The minute you shout, people don't listen to you they just focus on the noise you're creating rather than what you're saying. When I arrived in 2012, I introduced a policy for both adults and children of always remaining calm and non-confrontational. However, most stressful situations that arise, be it with antisocial behaviour or angry parents turning up, we have systems to deal with them. Nothing can prepare you for being responsible for it all, no matter how long you work as a deputy. When I took over, Ofsted ranked us as "requiring improvement" last year we were awarded "good" and now I'm aiming for "outstanding". Our cleaners are as valuable as our teaching staff so are our caretakers and our ICT staff. There are 1,100 people in the building and I need to make sure that every single one of them is doing what they need to be doing. Some of our students have traditionally not achieved well or have faced challenges in their lives, so we need to make sure they're as supported as possible. Children are here for only a fixed period any time that is lost, they'll never get back. I feel a personal responsibility if I see something going wrong. In a way, that's where the stress and worry of this job comes from, the knowledge that a school can make a huge difference to the lives of young people. That can be hard when you come home after a heavy defeat, but it's the best way I can handle it. Last year, I made a decision that I would discuss only really massive things with my family and try to leave everything else at the front door. There was a stage a couple of years ago (as manager of Oxford United) when everything seemed to be going against me. Drink helps, too I have been known to find the answer in the bottom of a pint pot. You have to stay focused and believe in what you're doing, but you can't be too shut off, either. Nor will I read comments posted beneath online newspaper articles. In the past, I have taken things personally, so I won't go on social media or message boards. Now there are 24-hour sports channels, Twitter, Facebook, forums and, in my region, a phone-in every night. When I started out in football (as a trainee at Southampton), there was the odd phone-in show and a few letters to the sports desk of the local paper. The main strategy I have for staying calm is that I'm careful about who I listen to and what I read. So I can't control those who officiate the game, I'm not in control of the opposition, I'm not in control of what kind of football my players are going to produce. You have to accept that certain things are out of your control, and know what those are. You have to deal with injuries, loss of form by key players, their mental state, and things happening in their lives that affect their performance. You've got the chairman and directors to think about, as well as the supporters. As manager, the whole responsibility for the club is on your shoulders. “In the past, such talk may have contained a large element of bravado and wishful thinking, but now it is a product of hard-won experience.” From his vantage point in a downtown hotel, Boot reports that “continued Russian attacks on urban areas are only making Ukrainians angrier at the invaders and more determined to resist their onslaught.” Meanwhile, “the Kremlin appears to be in disarray and mired in the blame game.” “That’s how confident they are.” He shares their confidence. While Boot was there, Ukrainians repeatedly assured him that they would cruise to ultimate victory. “From my vantage point in a hotel room in the center of Kyiv,” he writes, “the whole attack was no big deal - just a matter of losing a little sleep and hearing some loud thumps,” as air defenses provided by Washington did their work. With the front “only about 360 miles away,” Kyiv is a “bustling, vibrant metropolis with traffic jams and crowded bars and restaurants.” Better yet, most of the residents who fled that city when the Russians invaded in February 2022 have since returned home.Īnd despite what you might read elsewhere, incoming Russian missiles are little more than annoyances, as Boot testifies from personal experience. Something akin to normalcy prevails and the mood is remarkably upbeat. In a recent column reported from the Ukrainian capital - headline: “I was just in Kyiv under fire” - Boot writes that actual signs of war there are few. And as it happens, he’s positively bullish about the prospect of Ukraine handing Russia a decisive defeat in its upcoming, widely anticipated, sure-to-happen-any-day-now spring counteroffensive. Whenever that Washington Post columnist professes optimism about some upcoming bloodletting, misfortune tends to follow. ( ) – Allow me to come clean: I worry every time Max Boot vents enthusiastically about a prospective military action. |
